Work on plugging holes at Mullaiperiyar continues

The Public Works Department engineers are continuing with the work of plugging the holes in the Mullaiperiyar dam which were drilled for testing the stability of the dam by the SC panel.

As many as nine holes were drilled by the five-member empowered committee appointed by the Supreme Court. As the committee had submitted its report in April, officials of the Tamil Nadu PWD commenced the work of plugging the holes 15 days ago. The move was initially objected to by the officials of the Kerala Government and later they relented after Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa wrote to the Prime Minister in this regard.

Following the development, TN officials decided to proceed with the work till the cement stocks last. Now the work of plugging the 160 feet deep holes in the main dam was being carried out simultaneously.  The PWD officials maintain that the work would go on.
