TN allocates Rs 1 crore for transgenders' upliftment

The Government has alloted Rs one crore this fiscal towards upliftment of transgenders living in the state.

Orders were issued to provide Rs 55 lakh as government subsidy to the 51 Transgenders Self Help Groups in Tamil Nadu, an official release said.

Besides, it was also announced that Rs 1.45 crore would be provided as bank loan to the self help groups to set up businesses, it said.

"For the financial year 2012-13, Rs one crore has been alloted as welfare schemes benfiting the transgenders", it said.

So far, a total of 3,878 transgenders living in state have registered themselves and obtained identity cards, it said.

At a function in the Secretariat, Social Welfare Minister B Valaramathi presented a cheque for Rs 3.75 lakh as subsidy to each of six trangenders' self-help group for setting up various businesses, the release added.
