Mom held for sale of infants

In connection with a child-selling racket, six persons, including a mother and three brokers, were arrested by Tirunelveli police on Wednesday.

Police said, Selvi (33) of Naduvakurichi was living with Fathima (38) at Suthamalli, near Ti-runelveli. On January 18, Selvi gave birth to twins (both girls). As she already had a daughter and since she was struggling to earn a livelihood, Fathima suggested that she sell her infants to childless couples. Through Fathima, one of the babies was sold to Velusami (50) at Melapalayam, while the other was sold to a couple at Nagercoil in January itself.

Based on a complaint from Tirunelveli Child Help Line coordinator Jayaraj, Suthamalli police registered a case and rescued the infants. The police arrested Selvi, Fathima, Velusami and 3 brokers.
