Sri Lankan Tamils lack basic amenities

A three-member team from All India Forward Bloc, which visited Sri Lanka said the affected Tamils still live without basic amenities though the civil war ended three years ago. The team consisting of  party MP Barun Mukherjee, MLA P V Kathiravan and secretary D Devarajan was on a three-day visit to the island nation.

“Though the construction of houses have begun in some affected areas, major affected portions still have not been electrified,” Kathiravan said. “People are still afraid of what Mahinda Rajapakse government would do to them if they reveal the facts. We were told that at least 80,000 women were either separated from their husbands or have lost them. In Pudukudiyiruppu, notice boards claimed that huge tracts of fenced lands belonged to the Lankan Defence,” he said.
