Villagers up in arms against cops questioning women

The villagers of Kalpattu near Kannamangalam in Vellore protested against cops on Sunday, who stopped two women in the mountain area for a prolonged questioning session.

The policemen, reportedly belonging to the Excise Wing of Cheyyar, spotted two women during a raid at Namakara mountain against illicit liquor. When the police interrogated the women, they introduced themselves as the NREGS workers. However, not convinced with their answers, the policemen extended the enquiry session.

The enraged women alerted the local villagers who arrived at the spot and told the policemen that they were indeed NREGS workers. But they reportedly asked the women to accompany them to the police station for further enquiry.

Soon, the angry villagers gheraoed them preventing them from taking the women to police station. The Excise Wing personnel left the spot soon after. The local police personnel arrived at the spot and pacified the protesters.
