Private schools fleecing, finds education boss

Following complaints that private schools were taking excess fees for admission, Chief Educational Officer Pon Kumar on Wednesday took a surprise inspection at five schools.

The complaint was that private schools around Vellore were taking excess fees. On inquiry, it was found true, he said, adding that he had asked the DEO to conduct a detailed inquiry.

While the fees stipulated by the government for various classes were in the range of Rs 50 to Rs 200 for Tamil medium and Rs 250 to Rs 500 for private schools were collecting a higher amount  which they are not supposed to, he said. The government and aided schools have also been instructed not to collect fees above the amount stipulated by the government, he said.
