The nine fishermen from Akkaraipettai in Nagapattinam district, who were detained by the Sri Lankan Navy on the night of June 19 in mid-sea, have been released due to the quick steps taken by Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa. They would be returning home soon with their mechanised boat which was impounded by the Lankan Navy.

The Tamil Nadu fishermen were taken to Kankesanthurai by the Lankan Navy. Immediately after hearing the news, the CM directed senior officials of the State government to take up the issue with the Indian High Commission in Colombo.

“As per her directive, Tamil Nadu officials contacted the authorities at the Indian High Commission in Colombo and sought the early and safe release of the fishermen”, an official release here said.

Due to the efforts taken by the Chief Minister, all the nine fishermen were released without registering any case.
