30 computers and other equipments destroyed

A fire that broke out in the mathematics department of Pondicherry University on Thursday gutted computers and other equipments.

The smoke which originated from the Mathematics lab of the department was noticed around 10 am by a student and spread rapidly even before  the fire service was informed. Subsequently, they rushed to the spot and took almost an hour to douse the blaze.

Indumathi, head of department, said around 30 computers and other equipment were destroyed. The initial estimates pointed to a loss of approximately `30 lakh. The reason for the fire is yet to be ascertained. No casualties were reported.
