Gandhi Makkal Iyakkam launched a signature campaign on Wednesday with a target of collecting one crore signatures to urge the State to march towards complete prohibition of liquor.

The campaign was launched by various party leaders, including MDMK General Secretary Vaiko, CPI leader R Nallakannu, and Father SM Jayakumar at the movement’s office at Perimed. Speaking to reporters, Tamilaruvi Maniyan said that the representation with one crore signatures will be submitted to Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.

“We will launch a series of protests seeking complete prohibition...We insist the State bans bars serving liquor. This will force alcoholics to consume alcohol at their homes in the pre-sence of their family, which will automatically reduce its prevalence,” he observed.
