Five persons accused in the murder of Virudhunagar AIADMK woman councillor and her husband  surrendered in a Tirunelveli court on Thursday.

Thangapandiammal (45), AIADMK councillor for Ward 21, and her husband S Nagarajan (50) of West Street, were chased by a gang in a Tata Sumo and hacked near Mariyamman Temple in Virudhunagar on Wednesday. The five accused —Prakash (24), Ravi (32), Ayappan (42), Sabari (20) and Siva (37) of Virudhunagar West Pulalankottai Road — surrendered at the Tirunelveli JM Court IV. The Judge K S Paul Pandian remanded them to judicial custody still July 5.

Najmul Hoda, Virudhunagar SP, said that it was a revenge murder. Giving details of the case, the SP said that Nagarajan had allegedly killed one Sundaresan for deposing against him in a murder case.

The police officer also said that the slain Nagarajan was involved in a murder case when he was a minor. Police had even opened a history-sheet file against him.

Ayyappan, the brother of deceased Sundaresan was allegedly behind the murder of Nagarajan. “We will take the five accused under custody for further inquiry,” said the SP.
