3 held with ephedrine worth Rs 70 lakh

TIRUCHY: Seven kilograms of ephedrine worth Rs 70 lakh in the international market, neatly concealed in a suitcase, was seized from three passengers bound for Singapore, here on Sunday.

TIRUCHY: Seven kilograms of ephedrine worth Rs 70 lakh in the international market, neatly concealed in a suitcase, was seized from three passengers bound for Singapore, here on Sunday.

According to sources at the Tiruchy Airport, the trio were passengers of Tiger Airways bound for Sri Lanka and were caught during the baggage scanning on Saturday night. They were identified as D Vasanth Kumar (28) of Rajapalayam, his mother Veerachellammal (54) and one G Balasubramanian (38) of Srirangam.

The customs officials discovered the concealed ephedrine in small pockets in a false bottom in their suitcases.

Initial investigations revealed that the three frequently flew to east Asian nations and had been asked by some unidentified persons to hand over the suitcase to some persons who would be waiting at the Singapore airport.
