CHENNAI : One of the significant announcements made by Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa was about providing Tamil Nadu police personnel with their own houses.

The CM said 36,000 apartments would be built for personnel of the Police Department, Fire and Rescue Services Department and the Prisons Department. Ten acres of land in each of the district headquarters and 100 acres of land in Melakkottaiyur village in Kancheepuram district would be allocated for this purpose, she added. Leaders of various political parties in the House hailed CM’s move as a first-of-its-kind initiatives in the country.

Another humanitarian gesture of the CM was providing lime juice four times a day to traffic police personnel. She said, with a view to provide cops on duty relief from the heat, lime juice would be served once every two hours, between 8 am and 4 pm for four months. This would benefit 6,500 traffic cops from constables to sub-inspectors.
