TIRUCHY: As DMDK candidate Zahir Hussain filed his nomination papers on Friday to contest the Pudukottai bypoll, the major question among party cadre is whether Vijayakant will seek the support of DMK, which polled over 60,000 votes in the 2011 Assembly polls.

The possibilities include a specific request by Vijayakant to the DMK, a general plea to all the opposition parties to support his party or a covert understanding with the DMK at the local level. Most of the DMDK functionaries at Pudukottai feel that Vijayakant should break the ice by issuing a general statement seeking “the support of all the opposition parties to save democracy in the State”.

They are of the opinion that a open expression of support by the DMK will be better than a secret understanding. DMK workers and functionaries at Pudukottai are disappointed over the party’s decision to boycott the polls. However, they feel that it could be a ploy to win the friendship of Vijayakant for the forthcoming Parliament elections by supporting his candidate.

Although, the DMK district leaders will be happy to join hands with Vijayakant for the LS polls, they are firm that the DMK should not support his party without an open request from the latter.
