Steps are being taken to house all courts in the State in their own buildings.  Law Minister K P Munisamy, while inaugurating a building for the Women Fast Track Court and Alternate Disputes Resolution Centre, here, on Saturday, said, out of the 857 civil courts in the state, 88 per cent of them had their own buildings and the remaining would soon have their own buildings. The state has allotted `695 crore for the judiciary department this year and steps were being taken to allot `722 crore towards developing infrastructure of the courts to render speedy justice, he further said.

Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, with the aim of protecting women, was the first to establish All Women Police Stations in the country in 1991. To give justice to women, she has taken the lead in establishing fast track courts for women, he added.

Portfolio Judge Jaichandran, in his address, said, the primary reason for pendency of cases in India was the lack of judges. As compared to other countries, India had 10 judges per million population, whereas in some other countries, it was 100.

Local minister K C Veermanai, collector Sankar and Justice R Sudhakar of Madras High Court spoke on the occasion.

S Pandian, principal district and sessions judge welcomed the gathering.

Earlier, judges from the High Court inaugurated a mega adalat in which 888 cases were taken up, of which, 469 cases were settled.
