49 arrested for cockfight in Karur district

As many as 49 persons were arrested for allegedly betting during a cockfight held at Manjanayakkanpatti village of Paganatham panchayat near here on Sunday.

Sources said that the event was organised for three consecutive days for generating funds to construct a temple. Many persons in and around the village had participated in the event.

Police said that a complaint was received in the Chief Minister cell, following which a team of 20 police personnel from Namakkal, led by Namakkal ADSP Subbulaxmi, raided the village. During the raid, police seized cash of `2.15 lakh, 20 roosters and 150 knives. Forty-nine persons were arrested and brought to the Velliyanai police station here.

ADSP Subbulaxmi said, “As per orders from higher officials, we conducted a raid on the village and arrested 49 persons indulging in betting on cockfights. Some cash has also been seized.”
