100 sovereign gold, 5 kg silver, Rs 5.3 lakh cash looted

A nine-member armed gang barged into the house of a rice mill owner in Manapprai near here, and decamped with about 100 sovereign of gold jewels, cash of `5.25 lakh and five-kilogramme of silver articles, during the early hours of Monday.

A nine-member armed gang barged into the house of a rice mill owner in Manapprai near here, and decamped with about 100 sovereign of gold jewels, cash of `5.25 lakh and five-kilogramme of silver articles, during the early hours of Monday.

Sources said, Durai (52) of Annanagar in Manapparai, runs a rice mill and rice mandi (godown) business at Bharathiyar Nagar. Around 2 am on Monday, Durai opened his room hearing a knock on the door. He was shocked to see three masked men with lethal weapons standing before him. The masked men threatened the family of five with a knives and took out 76 sovereign gold jewels, cash of `5.25 lakh, and five-kilogrammes of silver articles. After this, the gang asked the family members to remove and hand over the jewels they were wearing. Manapparai police registered a case and the SP has formed a special team to trace the culprits. Fingerprint experts and sniffer dogs are used into inquest.
