Law to regulate acid sale soon, State tells High Court

The State government on Tuesday affirmed before the Madras High Court that it was in the process of enacting a strict law to regulate the sale and use of acid and prevent its misuse.

A counter affidavit filed on behalf of Special Secretary to Government, Shambhu Kallolikar, said the proposed legislation will also provide provisions for severe punishment for misuse of acids.

Till enactment of the legislation, acids sales would be dealt under Poisons Act.

The affidavit also elaborated on the proper treatment and rehabilitation of victims of acid attacks.

Given that such attacks cause psychological damage apart from the obvious physical injuries, it said the district social welfare officers will take suo moto cognisance of the incident and provide immediate counselling for the victims.

A district-level committee under collectors will be formed with joint director (health) and Superintendent of Police, district social welfare officers and an NGO working with women.
