LG urged to take steps for civic polls

Puducherry Manila Ullachi Kootamaippu took out a  Nadapayanam (walk) from Kizhur to Raj Niwas urging the state administration to conduct panchayat elections.

The leader of the organisation, Jaganaathan, along with 20 activists submitted a letter to the Lieutenant Governor, Iqbal Singh requesting him intervene in the issue and ask the government to announce the date to conduct the civic elections.

“The local body election will empower the downtrodden people and strengthen the democratic setup of our nation. There is a possibility for 1,138 representatives across the State to render their service.” the letter said.

“It is unfortunate that the elected representatives of Assembly of both the ruling and opposition party along with the election commission are colluding to not conduct the panchayat election, the letter further said. The civic polls were last held in Puducherry in 2006.
