MAPS unit II trips; Reactor cold shutdown

The second unit of the Madras Atomic Power Station (MAPS) at Kalpakkam near here tripped today, forcing authorities to cold shutdown the reactor.

"The Unit-2 of Madras Atomic Power Station was operating at 110 MWe. At about 7.20 AM today the Unit had tripped due to fault in the generator transformer high voltage bushing. Hence, the reactor was brought to cold shutdown state," MAPS Station Director T J Kotteeswaran said.

The reason for the fault was being investigated, he said in a statement here, adding unit I was operating normally at 170 MWe.
