The Tiruvallur police on Monday arrested Arun Subramaniam, DMDK MLA, in Mantralayam in Andhra Pradesh in connection with a land grab case. Police said a special team launched a search for him ever since his bail was cancelled by the Madras High Court on April 8.

Police said a special team with DSP Balachandran and DSP Kumaravel traced the DMDK legislator to a guest house in Mantralayam in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh and arrested him early on Monday morning. They said he would be brought to Tiruvallur around Monday night after obtaining a transit order.

Police said the MLA was arrested in July 2012 on charges of grabbing a piece of land belonging to the Tiruvallur Municipality following a complaint by Tiruvallur Municipal Commissioner Parthasarathy. Arun Subramaniam applied for bail in the District Sessions Court citing Presidential elections slated for the following day, for which he had to vote, and was released on bail.

Later, police filed a petition in the Madras HC stating that DMDK had boycotted the Presidential polls. On April 8, HC rejected his bail. “The hearing went on for 10 months and ever since the ruling , he had been absconding. He was also booked under the SC/ST Atrocities Act as the land was allotted to Irular community,” said T Senthil Kumar, Addl SP, Tiruvallur district.
