Plea to allow rooster fight

A petition has been filed in the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court seeking permission to conduct rooster fight at a temple festival in Pudukottai district.

Petitioner  M Kumar, hailing from Mattur Village in Pudukottai, submitted that cock fights have traditional been organised for several years at the Ulaga Nayagi Amman Temple festival. This year,  the cock fight has been proposed to be conducted on May 18 and 19. The organisers had approached the Pudukottai Collector and Superintendent of Police (SP) on March 23 seeking permission for the same. But the permission was not granted till date.

Petitioner said the temple festival witnesses one of the largest rooster fights in the country. Hearing the plea, a bench comprising Justices A Selvam and  Sathyanarayanan directed the Animal Welfare Board to file an impleading counter for the petition and adjourned the case.
