Thorapadi residents hold road roko demanding regular water supply

Residents of Thorapadi belonging to Wards 49 and 50 held a road blockade on the Big Allapuram Main Road and later picketed the tax collection centre of the Shenbakkam Office of the Vellore Corporation on Wednesday.

During the road roko, the members said they had not received drinking water for more than 10 days. Earlier, the residents squatted on the road and blocked vehicles. This affected traffic for more than 30 minutes. They also picketed the tax collection centre of the Shenbakkam Zonal Office.

During the protest, the residents said they had been complaining about the drinking water problem to the officials but no one seemed to care.

Councillor of Ward 50, A Murugan, said Wards 49 and 50 experienced water problems due to the shortage of staff in the local body. Water was being supplied from the overhead tank at Thorapadi with a capacity of 6 lakh litres to two wards with a total population of 20,000. But, only one person was available to operate the gate valves for the water supply to the wards.

On receiving information,   Bagayam Police arrived at the spot and pacified the agitators. They also assured to inform the officials concerned about the problem and find a solution.
