A father and son duo were hacked to death near Kumbakonam on Saturday night over a scuffle that erupted between neighbours.

Police said the family of S Anandan (55), an onion vendor, lived on the main road of Nadhankoil village near Kumbakonam. They had a strained relationship with the family of neighbour M Ambigapathy (25) for quite some time.

On Saturday night, Ambigapathy was reportedly caught talking over his cellphone about Oovia (21), daughter of Anandan. Infuriated, Anandan questioned Ambigapathy about this, and there was an exchange of angry words.

Following this, Ambigapathy collected a group of people and attacked Anandan and his family with sharp weapons.

Anandan and his son A Jagadeewaran (28), working as a painter, were injured in the attack and rushed to Thanjavur Medical College Hospital. Jagadeeswaran succumbed to his injuries around midnight, and Anandan died around 5 am on Sunday.

Patteswaram Police Inspector Murugavel, Kumbakonam DSP Silambarasan, visited the spot and conducted enquiries.

The police have registered a case of murder based on the complaint filed by Oovia and detained M Ambigapathy, his friends A Kannan (25), Rajkumar (25) and M Sulochana (40), mother of Ambigapathy.

Tipsy Dad Killed

A 57-year-old, daily wager was allegedly killed by his son following an altercation over the former’s drinking habit near Pettai on Saturday night.

Police said, Veerapathiran (57) of Kunnathur was a habitual drinker and his wife Meenakshi, mother Seeniammal, sons Maharajan and Petchidurai used argue with him over his addiction.

On Saturday night Veerpathiran came home in an inebriated condition and picked a quarrel with his wife and mother.

Petchidruai (25), angered by Veerapathiran’s behaviour, attacked him with a stone and murdered him on the spot, police said. After committing the crime Petchidurai fled the scene. Pettai police have registered a case and have launched a hunt for Petchidurai.
