Tension gripped Ambedkar Nagar in Vandaranthangal panchayat when the revenue department opposed the erection of a statue of Dr Ambedkar without seeking permission. Revenue officials attached to Katpadi Taluk visited Vandaranthangal Colony on Tuesday and held an inquiry.

The officials said bronze statues of leaders could be erected only after getting permission. However, the residents had installed a statue made of cement and bricks.

The villagers said they had submitted two petitions to Collector, asking the administration to install a statue of Ambedkar in the colony. But their attempts had failed.

“After getting permission from the village panchayat, we erected the statue. The panchayat council had also passed a resolution,” said Sathish, a resident. After the revenue officials failed to convince the villagers, they left warning them of action against those who had installed the statue.
