Dry taps trigger stir in Allapuram

Residents of Chinna Allapuram, under ward 52, staged a road roko on the Vellore-Bagayam road demanding regular supply of water to their area.

Residents gathered on the Vellore-Bagayam Road and blocked traffic. They complained that they had not received water regularly for the past month. They also said their petitions demanding water, addressed to Corporation Mayor P Karthiyayini and Commissioner P Janaki Raveendran have gone unheeded.

Local councillor R Renugopal said, “The area received piped Corporation water once in 10 days. However, for the past three months, water was supplied only once in 20 or 25 days.” The Corporation supplied six tanker loads of water every week to the ward for the past three months, Renugopal said. But since the contract period for supplying tanker water had expired, tanker had stopped supplying water to the area for the past month. He also said the Corporation had not settled payments to the contractor who supplied water by tankers. Traffic was affected on the road for over an hour.

Following the road roko, the Corporation granted permission for water to be supplied by tanker. Four additional loads were supplied on Saturday.
