Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Sunday ordered release of Cauvery River water from the Mettur Dam, to facilitate irrigation in three districts.

The Chief Minister in a statement released on Sunday said that release of water would commence on Tuesday and continue for 137 days.

The Chief Minister said that she had received requests from the agricultural community for release of water from the Mettur Dam for irrigation of areas served by the Pullambadi and New Kattalai high level canals.

“In view of these requests from the agrarian community, I have ordered release of water from August 6, for a period of 137 days. This will help irrigate 42,376 acres of farm land in Thiruchirapalli, Ariyalur and Thanjavur districts,” she said.

The announcement is part of a series of water release orders being passed by Jayalalithaa for the samba crop and to meet the drinking water requirements of a number of regions.
