The National Fishworkers Forum has petitioned the National Human Rights Commission seeking its intervention following an alleged attack by the Indian Coast Guard on a group of fishermen from Karaikal on Friday.
In a memorandum to the NHRC on Monday, M Ilango, general secretary of NFF, said that approximately 40 fishermen from a village in Karaikal were intercepted by the ICG as they were fishing in the Bay of Bengal. ICG personnel boarded their boats and demanded to see their licenses before pointing their rifles at them.
Four fishermen were injured after being assaulted, Ilango alleged.
