Gang attacks DMDK councillor in Tirunelveli

A three-member gang attacked a DMDK councillor with sickles in broad daylight here on Thursday.

According to sources, P Thaneswaran, councillor of the 18th Ward of Tirunelveli Corporation, was on his way home after dropping his son at school, when he was intercepted by the gang near the V M Chathiram Community College.The gang attacked Thaneswaran with sickles leaving him injured in  the neck, head and hand.

Passersby and Mani, a friend of the councillor, rushed him to the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital in Palayamkottai, where doctors who examined him said he was out of danger.

Meanwhile, residents of V M Chaithram, condemning the attack on the councillor,  blocked the Tirunelveli- Tiruchendur road at V M Chaithram bus stop.  Deputy Commissioner of Police M Rajarajan, Tirunelveli RDO Perumal and other officials rushed to the spot and pacified the protesters, who withdrew the protest later.
