A 20-year-old man has been arrested on the charge of sexually harassing a Class V girl student at Namagiripet, near here, on Monday.
Police said A Suresh alias Surendran, a resident of Ambedkar Colony, Vellakalpatti allegedly told a 9-year-old girl living in the same locality that her father was lying unconscious at his house. Believing him, the girl went with him. After taking the girl inside his house, Surendran had allegedly tried to sexually harass her. On hearing her screams, neighbours rushed to her rescue and caught Suresh. Later he was handed over to the Namagiripet police, who arrested him.
Police have slapped cases under sections 365 (abduction), 506 (i) (criminal intimidation) of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and 12 (sexual harassment) of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act against the youth based on a complaint lodged by the child’s mother.
Sources said Suresh was produced before a Rasipuram court and was remanded to police custody.
