Eight sheds of a fireworks factory near here were on Thursday gutted in a fire following an explosion, police said.

Police said the explosion occurred at Chidambaram fireworks, owned by one Kumaresan at 13:30 hrs.

Though the explosion caused some damage to a building near the sheds, nobody was injured as the workers had gone out for lunch, police said.

The fire spread instantly due to strong winds that prevailed at the time of explosion.

The reason for the explosion is under investigation, police said.

Sivakasi in Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu is a fireworks manufacturing hub.
