Teased over love, teen ends life, kin demand action on four youth

Tension gripped Dindigul government hospital after relatives of an eve-teasing victim, a class XII girl, refused to receive the body demanding action against four youth who were allegedly behind the act.

According to police, Nithya (17) daughter of Pitchaimuthu of Nallamanarkottai, was a student of Eriodu Government School. Meanwhile, Balamurugan (21) also from Nallamanarkottai was in love with the girl. He conveyed his desire through Karupaiah, a class XI student of the Eriodu school, to Nithya. Apart from Balamurugan, two other youth, Mahamuni and Arumugam, both from Nallamanarkottai were also in love with Nithya.

When the teachers of the school came to know about the act of Balamurugan, they severely reprimanded Karupaiah and warned him not to involve in such activities in the future. Meanwhile, Balamurugan along with some of his friends, teased Nithya when she came to fetch water in the village. Upset over the behaviour of Balamurugan and his friends, Nithya returned home and attempted suicide by self-immolation.

Locals and relatives immediately rushed her to the Dindigul Government hospital. However, the girl succumbed to burns without responding to treatment on Saturday evening.

On Sunday morning Nithya’s relatives staged a protest in front of the government hospital demanding action against the four persons responsible for the girl’s death and refused to take the body.

After Dindigul tahsildar and the inspector of north police station gave an assurance that action would be taken against the youth, relatives received the body.
