The Tamil University has coined 1.75 lakh technical terms in Tamil for 130 subjects including Chemistry, Engineering, Physical Sciences, Botany, Zoology and Law. These would be published with descriptions as Encyclopedic Dictionary in Tamil said M Thirumalai, V-C, Tamil University.
Presiding over the official language seminar for government officials held in at the Tamil University here, organised by the State Tamil Development Department on Friday, Thirumalai said, “Experts have prepared descriptions for 56,000 technical terms so far. Under the Greater Lexicon Project, six volumes have been published. A total of 25 volumes are on the anvil. There is also a project to compile a pure Tamil dictionary.”
He also said that a special software has been developed to correct spellings of Tamil words. Special training need to be imparted to those in the media for correct pronunciation of words, he added.
