17th National Book Fair Kicks Off in Puducherry with Release of 20 Titles

The 17th National Book Fair, organised by the Puducherry Cooperative Book Society, began here on Friday with Chief Minister N Rangasamy releasing 20 books of various authors.

More than 90 book publishers, distributors and sellers from across the country are participating in the fair and over one lakh books have been displayed, according to the president of the book society M K  Sayeekumary and G Murugan, secretary.

There are several literary events for the school and college students such as essay writing, music programme, instrumental music, singing, elocution, poetry, drawing and painting competitions, organised as part of the book fair.

Besides offering 10 per cent discounts on all books, there are special considerations for institutions purchasing books in large numbers.

While readers and institutions making purchase worth more than `10,000 would get Book Raja and Book Rani Awards, those purchasing books for more than `50,000 would be given Book Maharaja and Maharani Award. Children who make purchase for more than `1,000 would get Book Lover Certificate.

The Puducherry Co-operative Book Society was started in 1996 to publish and distribute books, conduct book exhibitions, and other related literary activities. It is governed by the elected board of directors.

The book fair remains opened till 29 December. Entry is free.
