24 held for group clash in Virudhunagar

Police on Wednesday arrested 24 persons in connection with a group clash that occurred at Vadamalaikuruchi village near here on Tuesday.

Sources said that Prema and Indira competed against each other in the last local body election. Prema won the election and after this clashes started between the supporters of both.

On Tuesday at 7 pm supporters of both the women again clashed with each other armed with weapons. In this clash Soundarapandian (32), a supporter of Prema died on the spot. Indhira (35) and her supporters Marudharajan (35) and Manimaran (40) suffered serious injuries and were admitted to the hospital. As Manimaran’s condition turned serious, he was shifted to Government Rajaji Hospital at Madurai.       

Following a complaint from Sundarapandian, brother of deceased Soundarapandian, 19 persons belonging to Indira’s group were arrested by police. Similarly, based on a complaint from Manimaran, five persons from Prema’s group were arrested. Heavy Police force has been deployed to bring down the tension.   

This is the second clash between the two groups in six months. In a clash six months ago, 12 were injured and a case registered then is pending in the court.
