Student stabs roomie over missing Rs 500, slashes self

A tiff between two roommates in a hostel in Tiruchy on Monday over Rs 500 that had gone missing, took a turn for the worse as one of them stabbed the other before stabbing himself.

P Prakash Babu (19) of Anthoniyar Street in Dindigul, who was doing a first-year degree course at St Joseph’s College here, and J Joseph Wesly (18) of Tirukovilur in Villupuram, also a first-year student in the same college, shared a room in the college hostel, along with four others. On Sunday, Joseph Wesly lost Rs 500 and inquired with his roommates, but he could not get any clue of the money.

On Monday, while the four others went to college, Babu was preparing to go for class. Joseph Wesly who had a suspicion over Babu, asked him to stay back. When Wesly asked Prakash about the money, he professed innocence about the incident.

This infuriated Wesly who grabbed a small scissors and stabbed Babu on his neck. Babu screamed for help. On seeing blood dripping from Babu’s neck, Wesly slashed his own neck with the same scissors.

On information, police from Fort Station rushed to the college and rescued the students, and rushed them to the government hospital for treatment. Later, the duo were shifted to a private hospital for treatment. Further investigations are on.
