Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code have been enforced on Vambakeerapalayam and Veerampattinam fishing hamlets and Thengaithittu fishing harbour, which witnessed clashes between two groups of fishermen belonging to the area.
District Magistrate S B Deepak Kumar issued the order on Monday night banning unlawful assembly by persons in these areas.
Superintendent of Police (North) S Ramaraj warned that police would take stringent action against those found violating the orders.
He said the situation is under control and tension has been eased following the ban order. Nearly 200 police personnel have been deployed in coastal stretch of Vambakeerapalayam to Veerampattinam.
It may be recalled that rival groups of fishermen from the areas clashed again on Monday and police had to open six rounds of fire in the air to bring the situation under control.
