Man attacked as card game goes awry

A day after a man was brutally assaulted after a petty quarrel over a game of cards, two assailants were arrested and remanded in judicial custody, at Mettupalayam on Monday.

According to police, Bashir (37) was assaulted with sticks and sickles by Mahendran (22) and Raj Kumar (22), after a quarrel during a game of cards at Rajapuram.

Bashir sustained injuries on his head and hands and was admitted to Mettupalayam Government hospital. He was later referred to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital.

Police said that Mahendran and Raj Kumar had initially managed to escape from the spot. “We found them moving around the taluk office on Sirumugai Road. On interrogation, they confessed to the crime,” police said. Incidentally, Bashir is a friend of one Tajudeen, who had allegedly hacked Raj Kumar’s father Palanisamy in July 2010. Tajudeen is in jail.
