Student ends life over sexist name

The investigations by the police into the mysterious death of a 19-year-old girl whose body was found in a decomposed state in a bush recently revealed that she was frustrated by her peculiar name, Podhum Ponnu, which often evoked laughter and derision.

On Sunday, the body of the victim, a college girl belonging to Neduncheri near Annavasan was found in a decomposed manner at Ochu Hill near Keeranur.

Her mother Chinnakannu lodged a complaint with the Anna vasal police that Pothum Ponnu was missing from July 11. Police registered a missing complaint and were searching for her. Villagers who found the body informed the police, who retrived it and began investigations.

In the inquiry, it was found that the girl jumped to death from Ochu Hill. Further investigations showed that the girl was frustrated to be called by a peculiar name. She mentioned in her suicide note that she was ridiculed because of her peculiar name, by her friends and neighbours.

‘Pothum Ponnu’ (girls are enough), is a name very common in the rural parts of the district.

The parents used to name the third girl in the family with the traditional belief that a boy would be born in the next delivery.  However, in this case, the mother delivered another girl child again.
