Tourist fined for killing baby monkey

A tourist was fined for killing a baby Bonnet Macaque near Ailyar Park on Saturday.

Pollachi forest range officials fined Ramkumar (29) for crushing the monkey under the wheels of his vehicle. Ramkumar, who was returning to his house in Cheranmanagar after visiting Aliyar Park near Pollachi, had driven his vehicle rashly though the reserve forest and had run over an eight-month-old Bonnet Macaque. He was fined under Section 9 of Wild Life Protection Act, 1972.

The department requested the highways department to lay speed-breakers.

“We have requested the state highways to lay speed-breakers from Angalakurichi to Aliyar Park at intervals of five kilometres, to prevent tourist vehicles from plying rashly. It will be helpful to prevent the death of wild animals in future,” said Ganesh Ram, Forest Ranger of Pollachi Forest Range.
