Woman dead, three hurt in road mishap

A 42-year-old woman was killed and three others injured after a van rammed a house located close to a road near Muthupettai on Monday morning.

Vailankanni-bound van was proceeding on the East Coast Road near Muthupettai. While it was passing through the Mill bus stop in Uppur village, the driver lost the control of the vehicle and it rammed a house.

S Sabarivasan (15), a 10th standard student and M Asokan (20), were hit and thrown off up to some distance. Banumathy (42), wife of Mahalingam and R Priya (25), who were inside the house, were grievously injured. Locals called for ambulance and sent all the four to the Tiruvarur medical college hospital. However Banumathy was declared brought dead by the doctors. Police registered a case and held Saravanan of Thoothukudi, van’s driver.

Meanwhile in Tiruchy, a woman was killed and 57 others were injured after two buses collided head on the Tiruchy- Chennai National Highway on Monday. Sources said, while a Chennai-bound SETC bus from Thoothukudi was nearing Coleroon river bridge on Monday.

An omni bus bound for Tiruchendur from Chennai started running amok after its driver lost his control and it dashed against the SETC bus. In the impact P Rajapushpam (45) of Pulianthope in Chennai died on the spot, while 57 others, including drivers of the buses were injuried.

The highway patrol team rushed to the spot and carried out rescue operations with the help of locals. Of the injured, 41 were rushed to the GH while 15 others were admitted to a private hospital. Toll Gate police are investigating.
