Vijayakant warming up to the DMK?

Which way will the ‘Captain’ swing will not only decide the fate of the sixth candidate in the upcoming Rajya Sabha poll but also would set in motion a wave for political realignment in the state.

Though the party has not declared its stand, there are enough indications of its veering around to extend support to the DMK. The party leadership has convened a meeting of its legislators and district secretaries on Sunday morning to decide the course of action.

“Our party’s stand in the Rajya Sabha elections would be aimed at defeating the political ploy, which prevents Captain coming closer with the DMK,” a senior DMDK functionary told Express.

According to him, party functionaries have conveyed their views to DMDK founder Vijayakant.

“Captain is not interested in running behind any political party for the lone the Rajya Sabha seat because our focus is only on the Lok Sabha elections next year. He would announce the party’s decision within a day,” he added, indicating that the actor-turned-politician appeared to have given up the idea of fielding a candidate in this RS election.

Asked whether there were any feelers from the CPI, sources clarified that DMDK was not comfortable with extending support to a party whose state leadership is seen close to the ruling AIADMK.

In the event of DMDK opting to back Kanimozhi, it would herald the firming up of a new alliance for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.
