Gang in jail attacks fellow prisoners

Police registered a case against six inmates of the Vellore Central Prison on Sunday, for assaulting two of their fellow inmates.

Police said Prabhu (29), Imran (23), Saravanan (24), Mohan (25), Karthi (24) and Thirumalai (26), who were undertrials accused in many cases, assaulted Assan Razzaq (26) and his brother Ashul Ahmed (34), who were also undertrial inmates in a PDS rice smuggling case, of Kancheepuram district. They were lodged in the new block in the prison.

The incident took place around 8 am on Saturday when Razzaq brought food from the canteen for the inmates in his block. The six- member gang picked up a quarrel with Razzaq stating that he did not serve the food to them first and attacked him with iron rods and plates. They also attacked Ahmed, who came to his brother’s rescue.

Razzaq and his brother were injured and were treated in the prison hospital, the police said.

The prison officials lodged a complaint against Prabhu and his associates along with Razzaq’s complaint with the Bagayam police. The police registered a case under Sections 147, 148, 323 and 324 of IPC.
