Normal life was affected in Valparai after heavy rains lashed the hill town on Monday.

In view of the downpour, the district administration announced a holiday for schools and colleges on Tuesday and Wednesday.

A large number of residents living along the river bed in Vaalai Thottam, Kakkan Colony and Toby Colony were in fear of inundation. A frequently used pathway was partly flooded on Monday.

“I was confined to my house the whole day as we were asked by authorities to stay home,” a resident said.

According to sources, three houses were partly damaged in Thulasinga Nagar, while a canal was damaged near Anna Nagar in the town.  Water level at the Sholayar dam increased to 116.26 feet after the site recorded 60 mm of rainfall.

“We have instructed school authorities and marriage halls in Valparai to accommodate residents in case of any emergency,” Valparai tahsildar Thiyagaraja said.
