An eight-month-old Rottweiler survived trauma for two days after it swallowed a blade. Vets at the Veterinary College Hospital (VCH) here managed to remove the blade through a non-invasive procedure.
The male canine was taken to the VCH by its owner Vinoth on Saturday after it swallowed a blade at the house on Friday evening.
A team of doctors, led by Dr M Subramanian, Head, Department of Clinics, and Dr G Vijayakumar, associate professor, subjected the pet to a radiography test that revealed the blade stuck in its stomach.
After the radiograph, the doctors decided to perform endoscopy to take the blade out of the dog’s stomach.
“We retrieved the foreign body — the blade — by performing endoscopy on the Rottweiler under general anaesthesia on Sunday at the VCH,” Dr Vijayakumar told Express. Since the dog was in good condition, it was sent home immediately after the blade was retrieved.
The veterinarians at the VCH noted that young canines would swallow foreign bodies like blades, socks, gravels, pebbles, hooks and safety pins. If they were retrieved on time, it would save the dogs from major harm.
