Lovers end life as kin oppose affair

Manikandan and Rekha, who were cousins, committed suicide after both families disapprove of their marriage, look for groom

A 23-year-old youth and a teenage girl allegedly committed suicide on Friday after their family members objected to their relationship.

The death of the young lovers shocked residents of Thamarapakkam Colony and neighbouring villages.

Manikandan (23) of Thamarapakkam Colony and his relative’s daughter Rekha, of the same area, were in love for the past one-and-a-half years. Both the families had objected to their relationship stating that they were cousins. However, the couple continued their relationship.

The girl’s father Elumalai decided to marry off his daughter and began searching for a bridegroom for her.

Dejected over this, Manikandan decided to end his life and hanged himself in the cow-shed behind his house around 2 pm on Friday.

Unable to bear the grief over the death of her lover, the girl also took the extreme step. She hanged herself at her house around 3 pm, police said.

On returning home, the family members found Rekha’s body hanging from the ceiling fan.

Both the families began preparing for the final rites of the two, without informing the police. However, the Village Administrative Officer alerted police about the twin suicide.

Police attached to Kadaladi station rushed to the spot and recovered the bodies of Manikandan and Rekha and sent them to the Government Hospital at Polur for autopsy. A case was filed investigation was initiated.
