Bid to smuggle PDS rice; Two from AP held

The personnel attached to the Civil Supplies-CID, Vellore unit, on Wednesday arrested two persons from Chittoor district in Andhra Pradesh, for trying to smuggle over a  half tonne of PDS rice from Pernambut in Vellore to their State. The police also seized 16 bags of PDS rice and an SUV that was used to smuggle the rice.

Police said Sivakumar (27) and Purusothaman (30) of Biredipalli in Chittoor, were arrested near Pernambut during a vehicle check. When the police intercepted the vehicle heading towards V Kotta from Pernambut, the driver Shanmugam stopped it and fled. However, the police managed to apprehend the other two. The seized PDS rice was handed over to the civil supplies godown. A case was registered against the duo.
