RAMANATHAPURAM: A day after the Rameswaram fishermen ended their 11-day strike, eight fishermen, all from Nagapattinam, along with two boats, were detained by Lankan navy in mid-sea for breaching territorial waters, on Sunday.
The Rameswaram fishermen had embarked on an indefinite strike demanding the immediate release of 81 fishermen languishing in various prisons in Sri Lanka. Local fishermen claimed that eight of their colleagues, all hailing from Nagapattinam district, along with two boats were arrested by Lankan navy in the mid-sea off Katchatheevu. The arrested fishermen were identified as Boominathan (46), Eswaran (22), Muniyasamy (40), Balakrishnan (45), Balu (57), Ravi (40), Murugesan (45) and Govindan (40).
