The International Airport Police seized 54 kg of gold biscuits worth `16.52 crore from suspected smuggler trio, who arrived here by a Jet Airways flight on Saturday.
Acting on a tip-off, police checked the three accused and found that they were smuggling gold biscuits, each weighing 1 kg, in three bags brought from Kolkata to Coimbatore via Bangalore.
The accused claimed they were senior executives of a retail jewellery and were bringing the gold from Scotia Bank in Mumbai and were taking it to a shop in Coimbatore. They also produced a photocopy of the purchase receipt. However, police dismissed them as fake.
Meanwhile, at Mandapam in Tamil Nadu, police arrested a duo for smuggling 35 kg of gold biscuits worth `11 crore. Police had conducted raid in their limits and seized gold biscuits weighing 35 kg from two persons. On inquiry, police found the biscuits were brought from Sri Lanka.
