PUDUCHERRY: Activists of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) picketed the Rajiv Gandhi Women and Children Hospital at Ellaipillaichavady following the death of a woman after she was delivered of a stillborn baby, here on Sunday.
Tension prevailed at the hospital as the activists and relatives alleged that there was delay in providing treatment to the woman.
According to sources, Roja (19), wife of Ram Kumar, a daily wage worker from Pudupet in Villianur, was brought to the Villianur Public Health Centre after she developed labour pain on June 5. As she needed advanced treatment, Roja was admitted to the Rajiv Gandhi Women and Children Hospital early on June 6.
The doctors attending on Roja, on examination, found that she was having high blood pressure and developed bleeding. They conducted a cesarean section, but the baby was born dead on June 6 evening. Roja’s condition too deteriorated.
According to sources, as the bleeding continued, she was advised an MRI scan and rushed to the Government General Hospital, where she died on Saturday night.
Roja’s relatives, along with the VCK activists led by Su Paavaanan, staged a sit-in protest at the main entrance of the Rajiv Gandhi Women and Children Hospital alleging that the delay in providing treatment led to the death of both the mother and baby. The activists also attempted to picket the hospital.
Resident Medical Officer (RMO) Sunderaraj and Medical Superintendent Jyothi held talks with the activists and assured that an inquiry will be conducted into the incident and action taken against those found guilty. Following this, the protest was withdrawn.
