Study to Draw Roadmap for Energy Saving

PUDUCHERRY:  The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), Ministry of Power and United Nation Development Program (UNDP) is conducting a study in 16 States including two Union Territories, to draw State-specific roadmap for energy efficient buildings in the country, said assistant energy economist, BEE, Girija Shankar.

While delivering a special address at a workshop on ECBC, organised by Renewable Energy Agency of Puducherry in coordination with BEE here on Thursday, Girrija Shankar said the study was to understand the requirement and issues for facilitating the process of implementation of Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC). The idea is to save 30 per cent energy requirement in upcoming buildings in the next 50 years.

The aspects of architecture, design, environment, building lighting and energy efficient systems will come in for minimising the energy requirements. Besides, any changes required in the act would also figure in the road map. State-specific road map would be drawn up for each State for minimising the energy consumption by at least 30 per cent, he said.

Currently, five states have enacted ECBC and incorporated it in their building bylaws by framing rules. However, the energy efficient buildings are yet to become a reality, said Karan Mangotra, Assistant Project Manager, UNDP. So far the workshops have been conducted in 10 States and UTs. The final report is expected by September- October this year, he added.
